Description

This picture belongs to a series of 64 landscapes inspired by the 64 hexagrams of the I Ching (Yi King), the Chinese oracle book. I hope you'll like my interpretation.

Words which inspired me: winter solstice, light on the top, shadow on the bottom, turn, walking on the path.

Overall, I like the light and the mood it gives the piece. I like how it could be that moment before the sun rises, or before it sinks.

I feel like the person with the lantern is the central THEME of the piece, especially since the title refers to him. But the central element here--the part that draws the eye the most--is the column of dark smoke rising up in the center.

The returner and the smoke create a little bit of a mystery here that makes me wonder what is going on? What is the returner returning from? But the way the two things are positioned doesn't allow my eye to explore the whole composition and the figure is almost obscured.

My suggestions for this would be to move the smoke further away from the figure and to put a little more light on him. As it is, the other elements of the piece (the forest, sky, smoke, etc.) overwhelm him and it's only the title that really lets the viewer know to look for him.
